Presenting: I have substantial live studio presenting experience and am often complimented on my warm and engaging style but can also deliver powerful and hard hitting stories with authority and gravitas. I confidently deal with running order changes while on air and technical breakdowns.
Script-writing: I firmly believe the job of a presenter is to be as involved in writing scripts as presenting them. I spend time crafting links with complementary graphics and am often called on to give opinions on legal, ethical and compliance issues.
Interviewing: I regularly interview senior politicians and others in authority live in our studio and down-the-line, challenging them and holding them to account. I am also used to dealing with more reluctant guests who have emotional stories to tell, using sensitivity and empathy to get the best out of them.
Outside broadcasts: I am used to presenting entire programmes live on location, usually without autocue. These range from large set-piece productions to more unpredictable breaking stories and lighter feature segments. I will self-produce these with a small team, finding the most creative ways to add visual interest.
Diversity: As the Diversity Champion in two ITV regions, I have led both newsrooms in devising strategies to make our coverage more inclusive. Some of my ideas are in use across ITV News. I regularly generate diverse story ideas and encourage colleagues to make diversity a priority and most recently coordinated ITV Channel’s successful application for a Diversity and Inclusion accreditation.
Online journalism: I regularly write online news articles, analysis and presenter blogs. These are often some of our most-read items. I believe we can learn much about what is important to our viewers from what stories get them talking online and we can use our website and social media to connect with new and hard to reach audiences.
Reporting: I have many years of reporting experience in television and radio across the North of England. I am used to dealing with major breaking news as well as following long-running stories, keeping ahead of rivals and using my contacts to bring in exclusive items. My work was nominated at the 2017 O2 Yorkshire Media Awards.
Technical skills: I am a confident self-shooting camera operator and editor with the skills to create templated and bespoke graphics in house style. As well as iNews and Avid NewsCutter I am also particularly skilled in using Adobe Premiere Pro, Audition, and Photoshop, as well as advanced use of spreadsheets. I will readily open new software and teach myself to use it and pass on my skills to others whenever possible.
